This morning I was invited to attend the 11th Annual Light of Hope Breakfast, a benefit supporting Jackson County CASA. It was fantastic! 1,300 people in a big ballroom at the Hyatt Crown Center gathered for an hour of motivation, good food, and education on the CASA organization. Les Norman was the tear-jerking speaker this year. As a former Royals player and a member of the 1989 US Olympic Baseball team, he grew up with a very abusive, alcoholic father who never attended ONE of his baseball games as a child. However, his father was always keen on telling him how terrible he played. (wtf?).
My favorite part of his mini speech was the fact that he attended our Carnival for CASA in September 2010 as a volunteer to sign autographs for kids & parents. Not only was he a huge part of the event, he remembered some kiddos running up to him before they left and hugging him and telling him 'thank you for coming!' He also loved how all the kids played together, whether CASA kids or not! How great is that!?!?! He (like I did 2 years ago) hopped into his car to head home after the event (well he went to his son's flag football game) and cried. From that second on, he wanted to be involved. It's heartwarming to know that an event that I personally work on touched someone so much that they are now HUGELY involved.
Volunteer people.
You never know how you can make a difference.
